Have you heard about the 3rd piece trick? The premise is that any outfit should have (at least) three pieces to it. Whether that means adding a jacket to a t-shirt and jeans or adding a belt and a hat to a sundress, the third piece can really complete the outfit. It offers a simple way to elevate a look and I find myself using it when I think my outfit might be too bland.
I’m going to show a few examples of where my third piece made my outfit more “fashionable.” Sometimes I add minor accessories too, which can tie the outfit together even more.
A regular go-to: jeans and a t-shirt…
…can be accessorized with a statement scarf (and a purse if you’re going out).
Summer casual vibes from this shorts and loose knit sweater outfit…
…becomes so much cuter by just adding a hat!
And what could be more classic than black and white?
…Black, white, and chambray!
Don’t forget that this can be used for work clothes too. In fact, it has saved me from getting too bored with my business casual looks!
This patterned dress is a great basic item, and I have definitely worn it on its own…
…But look how much more polished it looks with a blazer and an oversized belt!
Finally, the tried-and-true business outfit: black pants and a white button-down…
…Add a cardigan (and some optional accessories) and it completes the outfit!
So there you have it! Isn’t the 3rd piece trick helpful?! I love that a simple change can really elevate an entire outfit.
What is your favorite way to use it? Let me know in the comments!
