This post has been a long time coming! I’ve gotten numerous requests from readers to talk about my skincare and makeup routine and I’ve been putting it off because… honestly, I just don’t feel qualified. I’m not a beauty blogger, I don’t spend hours on my makeup, I don’t know all the tips and tricks out there. But I guess that’s sort of the point of makeup, right? We all just figure out what works for us and what we like as we go along. And that’s what makes it fun! Personally, I really value looking neat and put together, but I don’t want to spend hours to get there. My makeup routine is simple and the products that I use are fairly inexpensive.
I also want to mention at the beginning: I have eczema. My skin is very sensitive and very dry. Over the years, I’ve mostly figured out what works on my skin and what doesn’t, but I still get rashes breaking out when I least expect them. Lately, my lips and eyelids are getting the worst of it. If I wake up with a breakout, I usually skip out on makeup for a couple days. It can be hard to hide and it’s definitely embarrassing. But in the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to mention that! My skin is by no means perfect and I wrestle with it just as much as the next girl!
On that note….! These are the products I use for my everyday makeup routine.
Immediately after washing my face or showering, I moisturize with Jergens ultra healing lotion. Then I apply Shisheido SPF— a bit of a splurge but it’s the only sunscreen I’ve found that doesn’t make my skin feel greasy and gross. It’s very lightweight and works well under makeup.
To minimize pores and create a smooth surface, I use Revlon’s anti-shine primer. It is a balm that you apply with a sponge, which was a weird concept to me at first, but now it’s one of my favorite products.
I finish up by using a lightweight powder foundation. I currently use Bare Minerals Barepro pressed powder foundation in “light natural.” I have also used a more budget-friendly CoverGirl Trublend minerals pressed powder, and honestly I can’t really tell the difference so I’ll probably be switching back to that when my Bare Minerals powder is used up.
The most important part of my makeup routine is doing my eyebrows. Even if I do NOTHING else, I always fill in my eyebrows. I find it’s the quickest way to look “finished.” I use Revlon’s brow fantasy pencil and gel. It’s a two-step process: first I fill in with the pencil, then I brush on tinted gel to define them.
I finish off the routine by adding some color to my lips. I have a variety of colors and formulas so I choose based on my mood or outfit. My favorites (left to right) are:
- Burt’s Bees lipstick in “suede splash” is a very subtle nude and great for when I don’t want much color.
- NYX lip cream (color “dubai”) is sort of like a creamy lip gloss and gives a darker more saturated color.
- Sephora’s lip stain is a similar formula to NYX, but lasts longer. (Funny coincidence: the color is “rosewood” and I picked it out before I even knew the name!)
- Lastly, and probably my favorite: Revlon super lustrous lipstick in “coffee bean.” It’s a red-brown shade that stands out but doesn’t overpower.
And there you have it! That’s my everyday makeup routine. I like that it’s quick and easy. I don’t have any fancy techniques, no highlighting/contouring or smokey eyes. Maybe some day I’ll get more advanced, but for now it’s just the basics!
